Packing for yourself can be a great way to economize your move. To help you pack as safely and efficiently as possible, here are some Packing Tips:
- Do not over-pack boxes - the heavier the item, the smaller the box.
- Start packing up the items you don't need as soon as you know you are moving.
- Avoid mixing items from different rooms in the same boxes.
- Put detailed labels on tops and sides of all boxes.
- Don't interlock box tops. They must always be sealed with packing tape.
- Pack a box of things that you will need immediately at your new home and make sure it is loaded last on the truck so that the contents will be immediately available at your new home.
- To minimize the chance of breakage, pack and unpack over a padded surface so that if you do drop an item, it will land on a cushioned surface.
- Lampshades and fine china should not be packed in newspaper because the ink can permanently stain these items.
Decide what you will be moving and what to discard before we arrive to perform your estimate. Make sure to show us everything including basements, sheds, attics, garages, and mini-warehouses.
Dispose of flammables such as fireworks, cleaning fluids, matches, and aerosol cans. Drain fuel from your power mower and other machinery and discard partly used cans of oil, paint, bleach, or any substance that may leak.
Remove any fixture that is secured or bolted to your walls, such as pictures, posters, curtain rods, bookcases, shelves, coffee makers, microwaves, or can openers that are to be moved.
Remove all items from refrigerators and freezers. Defrost and let dry at least 24-48 hours in advance.
Unplug all electronic equipment such as television sets, home computers, stereos, etc. 24 hours in advance of move so they will be at room temperature on moving day. Moving a TV set and other electronic equipment in which heat is still retained could cause internal damage.
Remove all valuables such as (but not limited to) jewelry, coin collections, stamp collections, computer programs, precious or semiprecious stones or gems, rare collectible items, personal documents, manuscripts or other rare documents and place them in a secure area along with personal items (purse, wallet, suitcase) that you carry with you as you travel.
In advance, disassemble all items that must travel in pieces. For example: take mirrors off of dressers, unbolt headboards from bed frames, disconnect washer & dryer, etc.
You may leave clothing items in dressers or chests. Breakables and fragile items should be packed in boxes.
Empty all nightstands, bookcases, file cabinets and desk drawers.
Please seal all boxes with tape on both the top and bottom, and clearly label all boxes.
